Atari 2600

Developed and marketed by Atari, Inc., the Atari 2600 console was one of the first successful home video game consoles. It is known for its use of microprocessor-based hardware and games stored on ROM cartridges. Skyrocketing in the early 1980s, it became a popular household name due to its classic library of games, including "Space Invaders," "Pac-Man," and "Asteroids." This console was built upon the golden age of arcade video games.

The console was powered by a MOS 6507 microprocessor and had a very basic 128 bytes of RAM. It used a Television Interface Adaptor (TIA) for generating audio and video signals. The 6507 was known for its low cost and simplicity, making it a popular choice for early home computers and gaming systems. Despite its limited technical capabilities by today's standards, it was groundbreaking for its time.

The Atari 2600 influence extends to modern gaming, with many of its games and the console itself considered collectors' items. The simplicity and creativity of 2600 games have also been a source of inspiration for modern indie game developers. The Atari 2600 was officially discontinued in 1992, marking an end to its 15-year run. By then, it had sold millions of units worldwide and established a lasting legacy in the gaming world.
