Hangar # 2 - Binghamton Airport

Built in 1956 for IBM Owego’s avionics work on the B-52 Stratofortress, Hangar # 2 at Binghamton airport was selected by GP-Link as the design and assembly site for its Apollo Mission Simulator.

Hangar #2 has retractable walls and free-standing roof with enough clearance to assemble the Mission Simulator for training Apollo astronauts to operate, rendezvous, and dock their space craft. Link engineers’ offices were located in the Hangar.

Link's Apollo team developed the first simultaneous simulation of multiple virtual worlds.  Custom real- time capability for digital computation of on-board system status, navigation position, communications, and ground control and monitoring instrumentation was developed to permit the concurrent, interactive training of Mission Control, command module, and lunar module flight crews.  Computation of the dynamic ephemeris, flight regimes of the spacecraft, and simulation of on-board computers were particularly challenging
