Atari Jaguar
The Atari Jaguar was developed by Atari Corporation and was first released in North America in November 1993. It was marketed as the first "64-bit" system, aiming to surpass the graphics and processing capabilities of its 16-bit and 32-bit competitors. The console's game library included titles like "Alien vs Predator" and "Tempest 2000," which were well-received. However, the Jaguar struggled to attract third-party developers, partly due to its complicated hardware. Despite the struggles, it remains a fascinating piece of gaming history.
The Jaguar boasted a multi-processor architecture that included two 32-bit RISC processors, a GPU, and other supporting processors. This complex architecture was both a selling point and a challenge, as it made game development more difficult.
Despite an initial surge of interest, the Jaguar's sales were disappointing. It faced commercial struggles from Atari's marketing and the console's high price point. Atari discontinued the Jaguar in 1996. It was one of the last products released by Atari Corporation before it merged with JT Storage in a reverse takeover. The Jaguar is often remembered for its ambitious hardware and as a symbol of the challenges faced by the video game industry in the 1990s.
