Atari Lynx
Developed by Epyx as the “Handy Game” and later acquired by the Atari Corporation, Atari Lynx was released in September 1989. However, during this time, the console entered a market that would soon be dominated by Nintendo's Game Boy. The Lynx had a range of titles, including popular games like "Blue Lightning" and "California Games." While praised for its advanced graphics and hardware, it faced challenges due to its higher price, larger size, and shorter battery life compared to the Game Boy.
The Lynx was ahead of its time technologically, featuring a 16-bit processor, a 3.5-inch color LCD, and hardware support for advanced graphics features like scaling and rotation. These capabilities made it the first handheld console with a color display.
The Lynx struggled commercially, largely due to its high production costs, and Atari's financial issues at the time. Atari released a smaller, revised version of the Lynx in 1991, known as the Lynx II, with improved battery life and a clearer screen. However, this did little to boost its market share. Production of the Lynx was eventually discontinued in 1995. Despite its commercial struggles, the Lynx is remembered for its technological innovation in the handheld gaming market.
